A diagnostic statement needs to survive re-reading. It should be specific enough to be falsifiable and it should not demand a feeling. "Believe in yourself" fails on both counts: it says nothing falsifiable and it asks for an emotion you may not have.
Typographic Prints: What to Look For Before You Buy
The medium is typography. Print quality determines whether the statement lands.
Dark-ground prints are particularly sensitive to resolution. At 72 dpi — screen resolution — text shows aliasing on printed output. At 300 dpi the edges are clean at A3 scale. Check the resolution before purchasing. A legitimate print file states its dpi. If it doesn't, ask.
Resolution and colour mode
300 dpi is the floor for A3 print quality. Some files offer 150 dpi for "home printing" — this is insufficient. 300 dpi at actual print dimensions is the standard.
Colour mode matters. CMYK-safe palettes print accurately on most consumer and professional printers. RGB files print with colour shift — not always severe, but significant on dark backgrounds where the black values diverge. A print-ready file includes a CMYK version or specifies the palette is CMYK-safe.
Paper stock
200 gsm matte minimum. Lighter paper gives the typography nothing to stand on. On dark-background prints, thin stock shows through to the wall, which reduces the visual weight of the piece.
Matte finishes hold dark backgrounds without glare. Glossy paper reflects the room and competes with the text. Unless you're printing photography, matte is the correct choice.
How to Print A3 Art Without Ruining It
Most home printers max out at A4. For A3, use a local print shop.
Supply the file as a 300 dpi PDF at the correct dimensions (A3 landscape: 420 × 297 mm). Most print shops accept PDF without additional software. Specify matte stock, 200–250 gsm. No bleed required for frameless home printing.
Online print services typically cost €2–€6 per A3 sheet on matte stock. Turnaround in Ireland and the UK is usually same day or next.
A frame is a decision. There are no instructions here. Unframed prints on a bare wall read differently from prints behind glass — both are defensible. Make the decision deliberately.
